Houses
are built to sell and this means they must look "good." But after
you move in, you'll find that function (how the house works for
you) and user-friendliness are as important as the looks that attracted
you in the first place.
There
are a myriad of details that you should be concerned about and,
unless you have spent a lot of time being critical of the functionality
of houses, there will be a number of things you'll wish had been
done differently. Each time you move into another home you'll find
something you'll want to avoid in your next ones. If you have a
refrigerator in the corner, you won't do that again. But what about
a dining room that's too small or the clearance in front of ovens
and dishwashers...the list goes on and on. Ferguson spent years
looking for the things that should have been better. Then he wrote
Build It Right!
If
you're buying a house yet to be built (a custom house or a modified
spec or tract house), you'll have some control over what's going
into it. If you're buying an existing house (a used house, a spec
house or one in a tract) you'll try to get user-unfriendly features
fixed - either initially or later. Either way, you'll know what
you're going to be living with before you move in.
And don't forget, The New-Home
Checklist is available to help you make sure you haven't overlooked
something.

"Whether you are custom-designing
a new house or buying a tract or resale house, this book is must
reading. Its practical advice shows features to avoid, those to
include and ways to solve home design problems. On my scale of
one to ten it ranks a solid ten."
---Robert Bruss, nationally syndicated real estate columnist.
"If I were still designing
houses I would give every potential client a copy of this book so
they could take advantage of the book's wealth of home design information
before we planned their house. It would make design communications
more effective. More informed home owners make choices which fit
their needs best."
---James E. Jones, Licensed Architect, National Council of Architectural
Regulation Boards, Accredited

When
you help people get better homes, you both win. They'll tell their
friends how pleased they are and how much you helped them. That's
word-of-mouth, the absolutely best kind of promotion.
The
earlier you can get in the design/ construction/ selling cycle,
the better. If you are working directly with the buyer during the
design period, you can influence them by the simple gesture of giving
them a copy of Built It Right! It'll result in that better home
they'll tell their friends about.
And
it'll make life easier for you because they can take the time to
go over the book and won't need to take your time with so many questions.
(It's deliberately made to be easy reading, even for the non-professional.)
If
you're a buyer's agent, the book is another tool to help you please
your clients. Here, too, the giveaway copy of the book helps in
two ways: it enhances your professionalism in their eyes and it
gets them a better home. Both of which lead to the recommendations
that keep your business growing.
Wherever
you may fit in the home building industry, you will benefit from
the book. Read it yourself, then get copies to give to your customers.
We
